The Oyo State Government has announced the extension of its free public viewing of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) matches, covering Saturday’s third-place encounter between Egypt and Nigeria, as well as Sunday’s grand finale between Senegal and Morocco.
The announcement was made on Friday through the Oyo State Agency for Youth Development, following the massive turnout recorded during Wednesday’s semi-final clash between Nigeria and Morocco, which was decided on penalties.
According to a statement issued by the Head of the Media Unit to the Chairman, the decision to sustain the free viewing initiative was informed by overwhelming public response and positive feedback from football fans, particularly youths, who have consistently thronged the viewing centres since the start of the tournament.
While confirming the development, the Chairman of the Oyo State Agency for Youth Development, Hon. Adebowale Adebayo Falana, assured that the designated viewing centres at the Racecourse, Adamasingba Stadium, have been fully equipped with large LED screens, quality sound systems, and adequate security to guarantee a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
Hon. Falana noted that Saturday’s third-place match offers another opportunity for football lovers to witness elite African football, while Sunday’s final promises a thrilling conclusion to the continent’s biggest football fiesta.
He added that the initiative aligns with the broader vision of the Oyo State Government under the leadership of Governor ‘Seyi Makinde’, which prioritises youth inclusion, social interaction, and the use of sports as a tool for positive engagement and community bonding.
Describing the programme as people-oriented, the agency said the free viewing exercise is part of deliberate efforts to provide recreational opportunities, foster unity, and discourage social vices among young people.
Beyond entertainment, the Chairman stressed that the initiative promotes peaceful coexistence, civic responsibility, and shared social experiences among residents of the state.
The agency further assured members of the public of adequate security, disclosing that relevant security agencies have been fully mobilised, while volunteers and staff will be on ground to coordinate activities and manage crowds during both matches.
Football fans who have benefited from the initiative have commended the state government and the youth agency, describing the gesture as timely, inclusive, and cost-saving.
Residents, especially youths, have been encouraged to turn out in large numbers for the matches while adhering strictly to laid-down guidelines to ensure a peaceful and enjoyable viewing experience.
