Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 38-year-old man, Saheed Eegunjobi, for his alleged involvement in a violent attack on a commercial motorcyclist in Ibadan.

The command disclosed this in a statement released by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, in Ibadan, the state capital, on Monday.

According to the police, the arrest followed a collaborative effort between officers and community-based security partners, particularly the Agbekoya Vigilante Group, who apprehended the suspect and handed him over to a patrol team attached to the Idi-Aro Divisional Headquarters.

Olayinka said the suspect and an accomplice, who is currently at large, allegedly posed as passengers and boarded a commercial motorcycle from the Mokola area of Ibadan before launching the attack.

He explained that the incident occurred when the suspects got to the Modina area of Idi-Aro.

He stated, “Upon reaching Modina Area, Idi-Aro, the suspects stopped the motorcycle and attacked the rider, Sakiru Tiamiyu, male, aged 32, inflicting injuries on his head with a cutlass.”

The police spokesperson added that the victim fell off the motorcycle during the attack, while the fleeing accomplice escaped with the stolen motorcycle.

“The arrested suspect was apprehended by passersby at the scene and subsequently handed over to the police through the Agbekoya Vigilante personnel,” Olayinka stated.

The PPRO noted that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to his involvement in the crime.

“The injured rider was immediately rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment, while police operatives visited both the scene of the incident and the hospital as part of preliminary investigations.

“Photographs were taken and other necessary investigative steps have been initiated. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplice and recover the stolen motorcycle,” he added.

The command said the operation underscored the importance of collaboration between the police, non-state actors, and members of the public in combating crime.

Olayinka said, “This successful operation highlights the critical importance of collaboration between the police and community-based partners, as well as the active support of the public in crime prevention and control.”

He added that the Command appreciated the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for his continued support and leadership toward strengthening community policing nationwide.

Reaffirming the command’s stance against criminality, the spokesperson said intelligence-driven and collaborative policing strategies would continue to be deployed to rid the state of criminal elements.

“The Oyo State Police Command remains resolute in its fight against crime and criminality. The safety of lives and property remains our top priority,” he said.

Recall that in 2025, the Lagos State Police Command arrested one Friday Onu, after a viral video showed him assaulting a female commercial driver, Yetunde Amole, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos.

The viral video showed Amole visibly battered, with bruises on her face and her clothes torn, while calling on human rights organisations, transport unions and well-meaning individuals to fight for her.
