One person was fatally shot on Sunday, July 7, 2024, in the Iwo Road area of Ibadan. The attack, which has been linked to a local cult group, has sent shockwaves through the community and put the city on high alert.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailant emerged from a cab, commonly known as a “micra” in Ibadan, and shot a man dead in front of a phone and phone accessories shop called Omoleye. The victim, identified as Kanu, was reportedly a leader of a local cult group.

The shooting is believed to be a retaliatory act between rival cult factions, with many attributing the incident to the Axe Confraternity, which marks July 7th (7/7) as a significant day. The Axe Confraternity, a notorious cult group, is known for its violent activities and territorial disputes.

“It was a shocking and terrifying sight. The man was just gunned down in broad daylight. We’re all on edge, wondering if this will spark further violence,” said a local resident who witnessed the incident.

There are growing concerns that Kanu’s associates may seek revenge for his death, potentially leading to a cycle of retaliation and escalating violence. The local community remains on high alert, with many residents fearing for their safety.

“The city is on high alert. We’re all worried that this could be the start of a series of attacks between rival cult groups. The police need to take immediate action to restore calm and prevent further bloodshed,” said a community leader.

The Oyo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident and has assured the public that measures will be taken to maintain law and order. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
