Makinde May Announce 2023 Running Mate Today

Speculations surrounding who would be the running mate of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in the 2023 election may be put to rest today.

According to sources, the announcement of the Deputy Governor Rauf Olaniyan’s replacement may be made during a meeting of all aspirants for various elective posts.

Sources hinted that Governor Makinde’s decision to drop Olaniyan in the second term may not be unconnected with the obvious gap in their working relationship for some years.

When contacted on the possibilities of running together for the 2023 election, the deputy governor said the issue has not been mentioned or discussed between himself and his principal.

In the last 24hours, the social media has been awash with the name of Executive Chairman of the State Housing Corporation, Bayo Lawal, as Makinde’s possible running mate in 2023.

While Olaniyan hails from Igboho, Lawal hails from Kishi, Irepo Local Government Area in the same zone.

A source, who strongly believes Makinde will drop Olaniyan, said the governor is also being careful to ensure the replacement is also from the same zone to appease the people.

Lawal was Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice during the administration of late Governor Lamidi Adeshina in 1999.

But another source said political stakeholders are only playing games with the speculation and throwing up Lawal’s name so that the governor can look his direction, should he decide to replace Olaniyan.

The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Taiwo Adisa said there was no official communication whatsoever on the likely running mate of the governor or a possible replacement for Olaniyan in the 2023 elections.

He, however, did not rule out the possibility of a new name emerging after today’s meeting, saying the governor and his deputy seems to have been following different paths for sometimes now.

He added that the obvious feud and the need for someone to occupy the position of the Deputy Governor was what accounted for the various speculations and name being thrown around as likely or possible replacement but that nothing official had been issued.

Adisa said “Well, I cannot confirm the truth or not or the veracity of that story right now. But after the meeting of some stakeholders from Oke Ogun tomorrow (today, Friday), to other parts of the state, after the meeting, if it is true, the Governor will make the announcement and if it is not true, he will also make the announcement as to who is the candidate.”

Asked if the running mate is likely to be the incumbent, the governor’s spokesman said “You that you are operating in the secretariat, based on your observation, is it likely that he (Olaniyan) retains the position?

“What I can tell you is that, the two of them appeared to have been following different paths for some time now.

“But, somebody must occupy the position that is why people have been speculating the names, because they know that once the governor submits his name, then the party will ask him who is his running mate.

“But, if the final decision has been taken, as we speak, it has not been communicated to me, but it is possible that after tomorrow’s (today) meeting, the word will come out officially.”
