The National Association of Resident Doctors in the University College Hospital, (UCH), Ibadan have embarked on a warning strike over the non-payment of salaries and IPPIS data capturing.

Speaking with newsmen on Wednesday, the representative of the association, Temitope Hussein, said on Wednesday that the strike which will end on Saturday is necessary as over 300 members are owed two months salary and hinted that the payment structure (IPPIS) employed by the hospital authority does not only affect resident doctors in the hospital.

The Resident doctor representative added that 233 of the association’s members were not captured in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System thereby preventing them from assessing their benefits.

Hussein noted that the call for dialogue by the association to the authority of the hospital was ignored necessitating the strike action by the association noting that if the hospital does not respond to the association’s request, a meeting will be held to determine if the strike will be suspended or held for continuation.

The spokesperson for the hospital, Akintoye Akinrinlola, termed the warning strike by residents doctors as unfortunate and a blemish to the hospital’s reputation.

Mr. Akinrinlola noted that the issues raised “are national issues rather than issues peculiar to the hospital.”

He added that although the National Association of Resident Doctors planned to go on a national strike, it shelved the action following the National Assembly and Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria’s intervention.

“Resident doctors in UCH are not the only ones affected by the non-payment of salaries and IPPIS data capturing.

“Other doctors in other hospitals owned by the federal government are also affected, and they have started a dialogue with NARD to resolve the issue,” he concluded.
