Why Former Ekiti Gov, Fayose And Gov Makinde May Clash Again

0

Two key issues may make both Ayodele Fayose and Seyi Makinde clash again. They are the most powerful politicians of the People’s Democratic Party in the southwest region. And there would be clash of interest over two matters within the party. Even the two issues may be the last straw to break the carmel’s back.

Mr. Fayose clashed with Makinde earlier this year over the PDP congress in Osogbo. The congress went on and it was a battle of tians as they struggled for the maximum control of the PDP in the southwest region. Mr. Fayose supported Eddy Olafeso while Makinde preferred Taofeek Arapaja, a former deputy governor in Oyo State.

But the forthcoming governorship elections in Ekiti State and in Osun State can definitely make the two men clash once again. Even the Ekiti State would be a very serious battle between Fayose and Makinde. The Oyo State governor would have some interest in the Ekiti State PDP primary election and Fayose would want to protect his own interests as well.

Already Mr. Segun Oni, who happens to be a former governor, had obtained the nomination form and he would soon officially start his campaign. Whereas Mr. Fayose would have his own candidate whom he can control or influence. Mr. Makinde would see the Ekiti State governorship election as an opportunity to extend his tentacles. Hence, they would clash.

There are two factions of the PDP in Osun State as well. One faction is loyal to Mr. Ademola Adeleke, the PDP candidate in the 2018 poll while another faction is loyal to Mr. Akin Ogunbiyi. Then, Fayose and Makinde would slug it out when the state chapter of the party wants to choose the flag bearer.

The second issue would be over the PDP national convention. Some reports have already linked Mr. Ayodele Fayose to the vacant seat at the PDP secretariat at the popular Wadata Plaza in Abuja. Of course, Ayodele Fayose has not openly shown interest in the seat, but it should be noted that Mr Makinde won’t be ready to support Fayose.

The seat became vacant as a result of suspension of Mr Uche Secondus and there have been serious struggles to take over from him. It is not really clear yet if the PDP would consider the southwest region. And if it happens that the party zones its national chairmanship to southwest, Fayose would want to grab the chance.

Mr. Makinde would become scared that if Fayose becomes the national chairman of the party, he (Fayose) has automatically become the head of the party and Makinde would have to obey him. The Oyo State governor may not want this to happen, hence, he would clash with the former Ekiti State governor.
