Al-Qalam College students made a remarkable impact during their recent educational excursion to the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), where their inquisitive minds and active participation distinguished them among visiting schools. The trip, designed to bridge classroom learning with real-world applications, saw the students eagerly engaging with experts, exploring research departments, and deepening their understanding of forestry, environmental conservation, and sustainable development. Their enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity not only impressed FRIN officials but also underscored the importance of experiential learning in shaping future leaders.
On Thursday, 13th February 2025, students from Al-Qalam College, Ibadan, embarked on an enriching academic field trip to FRIN as part of their hands-on learning experience. During the visit, Dr. Adesope, the Head of the Forestry Economics and Extension Department, unveiled various awareness and sensitization programmes designed by the institute to engage youths, including agric-preneurship.
Dr. Adesope, in his welcome address to Al-Qalam students, provided an overview of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN). He stated that FRIN, headquartered in Ibadan, has seven (7) research departments, which include:
1. Forestry Economics and Extension.
2. Forest Products Development and Utilization.
3. Forest Resources Management.
4. Environmental Modelling and Climate Change.
5. Forest Conservation and Biodiversity.
6. Silviculture and Forest Management.
7. Pest Management and Disease Control
Additionally, the Institute oversees seven (7) colleges located across different ecological zones in the country and operates multiple outstations across Nigeria.
When asked about the rationale for selecting research institutes for this year’s field trips, the College Principal, Mr. Afolabi Idris, explained that the team believes hands-on learning experiences are crucial for enhancing students’ understanding of theoretical concepts. He emphasized that visits to research institutes like FRIN provide transformative learning opportunities that complement the school’s curriculum, inspire future career aspirations, and equip students with essential skills for success in an increasingly interconnected world.
“We were highly impressed by Al-Qalam College students,” remarked a FRIN official. “Their enthusiasm and depth of inquiry made the session both interactive and intellectually rewarding.”
One of the students, AbdRoqeeb Adedapo, shared his reflections on the trip, noting the invaluable knowledge he gained. “The visit was truly eye-opening,” AbdRoqeeb commented. “We had the chance to explore various departments, including the Entomology Department, where we learned about the vital role insects play in ecosystems. In the Pathology Department, we gained a deeper understanding of plant diseases, and in the Forestry Department, we discovered the diverse trees used in herbal medicine, which was especially fascinating as it highlighted the important role plants play in traditional healing.”
In addition to these departments, the students also visited the Mini Zoo, the FRIN Museum, the Botanical Garden, and the Product Laboratory.
The Director of Academics, Hajia Rukayat Otun, praised the academic team for their dedication in organizing the trip. She also expressed gratitude to parents for their continued trust in the school’s leadership and vision.
The students were accompanied by a dedicated team of educators, including Mr. Ajala, Mr. Davies, Mrs. Kolawole, and Mallam Mustapha, who guided them throughout the visit, ensuring an engaging and insightful experience.
Al-Qalam College remains committed to exposing students to real-world learning experiences that inspire innovation, critical thinking, and a passion for knowledge.
