Exciting Battle for Championship Title: Iseyin Triumphs over Ibadan in Governor Seyi Makinde Basic Education Schools Sports Competition Finals in Oyo

The Olubadan Stadium in Ibadan witnessed an exciting finale as the inaugural Governor Seyi Makinde Basic Education Schools Sports Competition reached its climax. This edition of the ‘Governor Seyi Makinde Basic Education School Sport (BESS) Competition’ was organized by the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

After intense zonal qualification matches across the eight educational zones, the battle for third place took place between L.A Primary School, Ilora, Oyo, and Baptist Primary School, Ajegunle. The Oyo team emerged victorious in a penalty shootout after a goalless 90-minute match.

In the highly anticipated finals, St. Brigid’s Primary School, Mokola, Ibadan, and Anglican Primary School, Igbomara, Iseyin, showcased their skills. The first half ended in a goalless draw, but the Iseyin team triumphed in a penalty shootout after a deadlock in the second half.

The State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abdulwaheed Adelabu, who kicked off the final match, emphasized the government’s commitment to sports development. He praised the organizers for their efforts in realizing the vision of the present administration and stressed the importance of engaging youth in grassroots sports.

The Commissioner, speaking on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde, highlighted the significance of sports in building resilience and preparing young individuals for a competitive world. He emphasized that the competition aims to develop the skills of pupils and identify new talents who can represent the state at national and international levels.

Mr. Jacob Dairo, the Executive Secretary of Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, lauded the positive role of sports in promoting national unity and deterring Basic Education pupils from engaging in anti-social activities. He emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritize basic education and support grassroots sports.

The event was supported by the National Primary Schools Games and Sports Teachers (NAPSGAST) and witnessed the presence of esteemed guests, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Adeniyi Olusanjo, Dr. Lydia Gbagi, the Coordinator of Sports Facilities at UBEC, Education Secretaries, and other stakeholders.
