Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi, The King Who Has Refused To Grow Old In Strength

If you have been a good reader of history, especially that which discussed Yoruba kings of the old days, you will realize that many things have changed in the kingship attitude we are seeing today. We will be talking about Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, the 83 years old present king of Oyo.

We could see how things have changed within the spheres of traditional rulership in different kingdoms in Nigeria. Oba Lamidi became king in 1970. Before that time, he was a well-trained boxer, he loved boxing so much that the only thing that managed to take it away from him was his enthronement as the king of Oyo.

Years after becoming King of Oyo, Oba Lamidi is yet to forget that he used to be a boxer. Recently, he was seen throwing some punches like the professional boxer he used to be before he became king. At 83 years, Oba Lamidi could still throw punches, crosses, jabs, uppercuts, and move at swift paces. He was doing his while many of his subjects applauded him while others took part in the exercise.

He was also recently seen carrying out physical exercises in his palace. To my amusement, Oba Lamidi could still do push-ups and other forms of exercises without breaking down. He did this while other people looked on.

Some months ago, a video trended online. In the video, Oba Lamidi and one of his younger wives could be seen dancing to the amusement of the party attendees.

Oba Lamidi is a king who has selectively differentiated rulership duties from his fun life. Although old physically, Oba Lamidi has refused to let old age steal away his strength and fun-seeking life. He is the king who has refused to grow old in his mind.
