Oyo Council Chair, Sunmonu Fight Over Anti-Party Activities

All is not well between former Oyo assembly speaker and ex-senator Monsurat Sunmonu and the chairman of her Oyo East local government, Saheed Arowosaye.

According to a report by OYO INSIGHT, the duo have now become estranged after Sunmonu was accused anti-party activities and overbearing tendencies, said sources in the know of development between them.

Sunmonu and Arowosaye were until recently political allies though the chairman appeared to regard the former lawmaker as a sort of godmother.

But the fight between them started after party members and leaders in the council area became aggrieved as Sunmonu and her loyalists refused to work for PDP national assembly candidates, especially Kamil Akinlabi, during the last February 25, 2023 elections.

“Then, as the governorship and state legislative election was drawing near, the leaders convened a meeting at the instance of Ademola Santos, and Sunmonu was not invited because she was distrusted.

“Perceiving she was being sidelined and undermined in her own local government, Sunmonu was said to have tried to attend the meeting but was blocked by the other leaders. It was at the meeting that Arowosaye confronted Sunmonu and fired blistering remarks at her, including accusations of being overbearing,” another source explained.

Multiple sources including close aides of the two politicians confirmed the feud to our Source.

“Her own is too much,” an aide of the chairman said, asking not to be named.

The feud appears to be a blow to Sunmonu having now had to endure losing the loyalty of her own local government chairman and other leaders.

The feud has seen the chairman search for new alliances in Oyo.
